Children are rarely infected with SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and are less likely to get COVID-19. Only 1-2 percent of cases of this disease occur in children. This is indicated by research in many countries. In China, there was 2.2 percent of infections in the youngest, in the USA – 1.7 percent, in Italy, around 1.0 percent, and in Spain 0.8 percent.
According to dr hab. Ernest Kuchar, head of the Pediatric Clinic with the Observation Department of the Medical University of Warsaw in our country, probably falls under 2% of children’s new coronavirus infection. So far, there were a total of just over 100 children infected with it.
Most children go to the hospital not because of COVID-19, but because of other diseases. “We adopted, for example, a boy with appendicitis, a urinary tract infection, and a patient with esophageal varices, and they were also infected with coronavirus infection, most likely from an adult,” explains the specialist.
In infected children, there is usually no evidence of COVID-19 or only mild. The new coronavirus generally causes respiratory infections that can take a wide range of clinical forms ranging from the common cold to respiratory failure. However, children tend to have milder cases that resemble a cold or warm viral pneumonia.
“So far, we have not noticed in Poland the case of PIMS (Pediatric inflammatory, multisystem syndrome), a multisystem inflammatory reaction syndrome reminiscent of Kawasaki’s disease, generalized vasculitis of unknown etiology in COVID-19” – said Dr. hab. Kuchar. It leads to an incorrect response of your immune system. Of course, coronavirus infection can cause it, but it has not yet been proven.
Children due to coronavirus infection may experience gastrointestinal complaints slightly more often than adults. However, no acute diarrhea causing dehydration develops.
Observations in China and the US show that the closure of schools and kindergartens by only 2 percent. they have reduced the number of new coronavirus infections. “All children with the infection that came to us have become infected with adults. Reverse situations are rather sporadic. One of the mothers who looked after the infected child, even after a few weeks in one room, did not become infected with coronavirus,” – adds the specialist.
Pregnant women are also not particularly exposed to COVID-19. “Generally, pregnant women have more severe infectious diseases, such as influenza or hepatitis A. We are too afraid of transmission to the fetus, as in the case of toxoplasmosis, chickenpox, rubella, or HIV. For COVID-19, there are not such observations. If the newborn was infected, it was directly from the mother, not through breast milk or placenta. In pregnant women, no complications were resulting from the severe course of COVID-19 disease in Poland “- assures dr hab. Kuchar.
